Hurst Romans Black v Westwood Wanderers

Final Score 0-1

Team:   Josh (Goal keeper)

            Nathan (Defender), Callum Pilbeam (Defender

            Archie (Midfield), Elliott (Midfield)

            Louis (Striker), Callum Timms (Striker)

Sub:      Alex, David, George and Jack

With the lads bringing what they had practiced in training into the match and showing a lot of running with purpose meant chances to get an early goal came thick and fast. The first chance came when the goal keeper spilled the ball and Archie was quick to close him down, but the goal keeper managed to recover the ball in time. Not long after Louie passed to Callum Timms who shot just wide of the goal. The lads earned two corners in quick succession and on the second corner Elliott had a shot that went wide of the post. On the few occasions that Hurst did manage to break out of their half both Callum Pilbeam and Nathan broke up their attacks and passed to the midfield to continue their onslaught on the Hurst Goal. Hurst did manage to out play us and get one on one with Josh but he was quickly out to make an excellent save. David came on for Nathan and with Hurst starting to get a foothold in the game David had to get straight into the action with well-timed tackles. Near the end of the first half Louie took a knock on his ankle so Alex came on for him in the last few minutes of the first half.

The First half ended 0-0

The second Half started with Hurst showing their intent in getting something out of the game by bringing on their big lads, which made the second half a more even affair. Archie got things going with a cracking shot from just outside of the box, which was saved by their goalkeeper. Both David and Callum Pilbeam showed good skill and composure to keep Hurst at bay and the midfield still managed to create chances on the Hurst goal, on one such occasion Archie took a throw in which Callum Timms collected and crossed in for Elliott to have a shot on target that was saved by their keeper. Another chance came when Archie provided an excellent cross into the box that both Alex and George who had just come on for Elliott was just unable to get a foot to it. Hurst posed a bigger threat (in more ways than one) in the second half and on a number of occasions Josh had to make some excellent saves to keep the score line level. At the other end Archie and Callum Timms combined well to get Alex in on goal, it was Archie and Alex’s turn to be the providers for Callum Timms. Jack came on to continue this great team effort and made an excellent run on goal and force a corner, Callum Pilbeam took the corner kick which took a deflection off one of the Hurst players to break the deadlock, 1-0 to the lads. Having recovered from his knock Louie came back on for Alex for the remaining minutes of the game, which were frantic and the lads had to work hard as a team to keep Hurst at bay and was mighty relieved to hear the final whistle.

The game ended 0-1

Well done lads another great all round team performance, there wasn’t any one performance that stood out because you all played an important part in the game and you got the result that your hard work deserved, so once again well done.

Its derby weekend, Arsenal host Chelsea, Everton take on Liverpool and the main game of the weekend Westwood Wanderers v Westwood Colts. Like most derby’s it wasn’t pretty but it sure was exciting to watch and the parents of both sets of lads got right behind them to make it the noisiest game at the venue (well done to the parents).

It was a pretty even start to the first half with most of the action taking place in the midfield with Elliott, Archie and Callum working hard tracking back and trying to bring the ball forward, but was reduced to long shots at goal. Archie had a shot go just wide and fired one over the cross bar. The Colts had a period of possession, which ended with Owen scoring an excellent goal making the score line 1-0 to the Colts. With the Colts in the ascendance both David and Callum Pilbeam put in some excellent tackles to keep the Colts at bay. Louie came on for Alex to strengthen midfield. With the half nearing the end both Callums combined well down the flank which ended with Callum Timms’ header being saved. The first half ended with Josh having to make a couple of excellent saves to keep the score line 0-1.

The first half finished 0-1

Nathan came on for Archie to start the second half and played well in midfield breaking up the Colts attacks and clearing the ball. Having worked his socks off, Elliott was replaced by George who continued the good work. The Colts kept pressing for their second goal but the lads worked hard as a team to keep the Colts at bay. With the game nearing its conclusion our lads were pressing for an equaliser, Louie on numerous occasions brought the ball forward and combined well with both Jack and Callum who both had shots saved. In pressing forward we left ourselves open at the back and on a number of times Callum Pilbeam and Josh were left with 3 attacking players but they held their nerve and the game ended 0-1.

The Game finished 0-1

It was an exciting match to watch and every one of you played your part in making it a great game. You all worked tirelessly right to the end and was so close to making it all square. Great effort lads.

Westwood Wanderers V Caversham afc Falcons

Final Score 6-0

Team:   Josh (Goal keeper)

            Callum Pilbeam (Defender), Nathan (Defender)

            Archie (Midfield), Elliott (Midfield)

            Callum Timms (Striker), Alex (Striker)

Sub:      Jack, David, George and Louie

With two wins behind us the lads were going for their third win in a row, but Caversham had plans of their own and for the first ten minutes were bossing the game with their big number 5 bringing both Nathan and Callum P into action early on and Josh had to make a good sliding save to keep the score line level. Elliott and Archie began to take control of the midfield and more of the game was played in Cavershams half of the pitch, it wasn’t long before Callum Timms had a shot on goal, which was blocked but luckily Alex was there to tap in the loose ball making it 1-0.

This settled the lads who began to play as we know they can with excellent passing and movement. Archie and Elliott combined well to feed Callum Timms who had a shot saved, then Callum passed to Alex who fed Archie who scored with an excellent drive in the top left hand corner. The third goal was an excellent team goal when the ball was worked from the defensive pairing of Nathan and Callum on to Elliott who passed to Archie then onto to Alex who slipped Callum in to make it 3-0. Louie came on for Alex and George came on for Nathan. From a well worked throw in Elliott had a shot just go wide. On the few occasions Caversham did break out of their half both Callum and George were up to the challenge with some well timed tackles.

The first half finished 3-0

Jack came on for Callum Timms and David came on for Callum Pilbeam to start the second half. The lads carried on from where the first half left off with Louie and Jack combining well to feed Archie who just shot wide. With the lads pushing forward Caversham managed to break out of their half but both David and George were at the top of their game and kept them at bay. Elliott had a corner which he swung into the goal area which took a deflection off one of their defenders and went into the back of the net to make it 4-0. It wasn’t long before it was 5-0 when Archie passed to Louie who turned in on goal and took his shot well. Elliott and Louie worked well together to feed Jack who made it 6-0. Callum Timms came on for Archie and Nathan came on for Elliott. Nathan worked hard in the middle of the field and combined well with Louie to feed Jack who’s shot on goal just went wide. With everyone pushing forward, all looking to get a goal it left us exposed at the back from time to time but David was there to make good saving tackles. Right at the end of the match Caversham had a goal kick which came straight out to Nathan who returned the ball just going wide of the post.

The Game finished 6-0

Well done lads, it took a little while to get into your stride but once you did there was no stopping you. Another impressive win.

Westwood Wonderers V Barton Rovers C

Final Score 3-2

Team:   Josh (Goal keeper)

            David (Defender), Nathan (Defender)

            Archie (Midfield), Elliott (Midfield)

            Callum (Striker), Alex (Striker)

Sub:      Jack, Callum P and George

The lads full of confidence from their win against Woodley Saints Kites started the game by pushing forward with every opportunity, Callum had an early shot just go wide and then soon after Alex passed to Elliott who’s shot was smartly saved by the Barton keeper. Barton were well organised and were always a threat going forward but both David and Nathan put in good saving tackles a number of times allowing the midfield to bring the ball forward and having a hat full of shots at goal, on one such occasion Alex and Callum combined well to feed Archie who had a long dipping shot bouncing off the cross bar. After one of our attacks broke down Barton broke free and brought the ball forward and were more clinical with their finishing making the score 1-0 to Barton. Eager to get the goal back Elliott and Archie brought the ball forward and passed to Callum who had his shot just saved off the line and then soon after Alex’s shot went wide. Once again Barton broke out from their half to get their second goal making the score 2-0. All credit to the lads they didn’t give up and both Elliott and Archie battled in the midfield. On one such occasion Elliott earned a corner which he fired in to the box and with Barton unable to clear their lines, Callum’s close range shot was blocked and Alex managed to walk in the rebound making the score 2-1 to Barton.

The half finished 1-2

Callum P came on for Nathan at the start the second half. The lads continued as they finished the first half by pushing forward trying get the equaliser, we didn’t have to wait long because Alex and Callum combined well for Callum to score his first goal making the score 2-2. Barton weren’t going to give up and forced Josh to make an excellent save to keep the score line level. The lads worked hard as a team closing down and tackling hard keeping Barton at bay and it wasn’t long before our third goal came when Alex found Elliott then onto Callum who scored his second goal to make the score 3-2. Jack came on for Callum who had run him self into the ground. Barton weren’t going to go quietly and both David and Callum P had to make plenty of well timed tackles and interceptions to keep Barton at bay. George came on for Alex and worked hard harassing and breaking up their attacks in the midfield. Jack nearly made it safe for us near the end when he broke free from near the half way line and made a good run in on goal but was denied by the goalkeeper. Our hearts were in our mouths right at the end when Barton had a shot on goal, which was bound for the top corner, Josh dived and pushed the ball up in the air and as it dropped down on the line Callum P calmly hooked it to safety.

The game finished 3-2

Well done lads that was a hard fought game and you didn’t give up once and to come back from being 2- 0 down shows great character and belief.

Westwood Wanderers V Woodley Saints Hawks

Final Score 3-1

Team:   Josh (Goal keeper)

            David (Defender), Callum (Defender)

            Archie (Midfield), Elliott (Midfield)

            Louie (Striker), Alex (Striker)

Sub:      Jack, Nathan and George

The first half wasn’t the best for the lads but fortunately Woodley Hawks weren’t playing well either, both sets of players fought hard and found it difficult to get their passing game going which put a lot of pressure on both sets of defences. Early into the half both David and Callum had to make good strong tackles to keep Woodley Hawks at bay and when they did get through Josh was up for the challenge. Woodley had a corner, which was cleared by Callum who unfortunately took a knock and was subbed. Nathan came on for Callum and helped keep Woodley at bay with some good strong tackles. Woodley had a long shot which was coolly saved by Josh,, this sparked the team into action with Louie having a long shot on goal and Elliott’s effort hitting the cross bar, how many times have we seen that this season, not to be left out Alex had a shot go wide. The highlight of the half was a good passing move between Louie, Elliott and Archie. Archie ended the half with a good effort on goal.

The first half ended 0-0

The second half was much better and the lads found their passing early on with Archie passing to Alex who found Louie who in turn passed to Elliott, the move earned the team a corner which Elliott took, Louie collected the ball from the corner and passed it to Archie who’s shot on goal was blocked. The pressure on their goal continued with Elliott’s shot going wide and again when Alex collected the ball turned and shot at goal bringing a good save from their keeper. With fresh legs needed Jack came on for Louie. The deadlock was finally broken when Alex broke free of the defence and scored 1-0. The lads had earned a throw in deep in Woodley Hawks half, Archie threw the ball to Elliott who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper 2-0. Woodley Hawks kept working but both Nathan and David were up to the challenge with good tackling and calm passes to the midfield. George came on for David making an instant impact with hard tackles and started the move that brought our third goal when he passed to Jack then onto Alex who got his second of the game. Louie came on for Alex and Callum came back on for Elliott. Louie fresh from the bench made a great pass to George who nearly scored. After working hard all game Archie took a knock and had to be subbed bringing Alex back into the game. Louie full of running dribbled passed two or three challenges but was tackled before he could get his shot away, Louie soon had another chance when Alex made a looping pass to Louie who’s shot was just saved off the bar. Right at the end of the game Woodley Hawks had a break and clawed a goal back but the damage was done the game ended 3-1.

Well done Lads, probably not the best of performances in the first half but you battled to keep it level at half time. But you certainly found your form in the second half and earned your well deserved first win of the campaign.

This weeks Effort Award went to Alex.

Maidenhead C v Westwood Wanderers

Final Score 4-0

Team:   Josh (Goal keeper)

            Nathan (Defender), Callum (Defender)

            Archie (Midfield), Elliott (Midfield)

            Louie (Striker), Alex (Striker)

Subs:    George and David

This was a game of two half’s. The first half performance was one of the best I’ve seen the lads play with great passing and movement through the whole team. With this confident play the lads pushed Maidenhead back from the off, forcing two early corners bringing their keeper into early action with two smart saves from Alex’s shots on goal. Elliott and Archie had full control of the midfield, breaking up Maidenheads attacks and bringing the ball forward and combining well with Louie and Alex upfront causing them all sorts of trouble. Alex with a neat turn in the box got away from his marker, his shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by the defender. Another good cross from Elliott hit the out stretched arm of a defender which looked to be inside the penalty area, but the ref said it was outside the box. Archie stepped up and cracked a shot towards the top corner, with the goalie beat a goal looked certain, until a m/head defender got his head to the ball and pushed it wide.  Maidenhead gave us a couple of warnings in the first half with quick breaks, turning defence into attack, bringing Callum and Nathan into play making smart tackles and feeding the midfield with good passes. When Maidenhead did get past the defence Josh was up for the challenge with an excellent tip round the bar. The half ended with Maidenhead having a free kick hitting the crossbar.

The first half ended 0-0

David came on for Nathan to start the second half and worked hard trying to keep Maidenhead at bay. Unfortunately the second half didn’t go to plan with Maidenhead showing why they are top of the league, the lads were pushing forward when the play broke down and Maidenhead counter attacked quickly and with our lads out of position Maidenhead striker was left one on one with Josh who bravely came out to meet him but their striker got around him and scored. With the lads wanting to get the goal back Josh was left exposed again making it 2-0 to Maidenhead. George came on for Alex and worked hard to break up their attacks allowing Callum to bring the ball forward and had an excellent shot on goal, 3-0. Maidenhead kept the pressure up, forcing Josh into making a good diving save and pushing the ball out for a corner, from which they unfortunately scored. The lads didn’t give up and worked hard breaking up their attacks. Maidenhead were awarded a free kick which was taken well leaving Josh no chance of saving it, 4-0. Right up to the final whistle the lads kept working to get a goal but it just wasn’t to be.

Final Score 4-0

Woodley Hammers Hawks 2 v Westwood Wanderers 2

Team:   Josh (Goal keeper)

            Nathan (Defender), Callum (Defender

            Archie (Midfield), Elliott (Midfield)

            Louis (Striker), Alex (Striker)

Sub:      Jack and David

The lads started the match well and dominated the play with some excellent passing and movement. One such movement early in the half nearly ended in a goal which started with a good block from Callum then released the ball to Archie then onto Louis who slid in a pass to Alex who’s shot just went wide. The good movement from the lads was rewarded soon after when a throw in was awarded which Archie took, Louis collected the ball and passed it to Alex in the box who scored in the bottom left corner. With Nathan and Callum in control at the back, freed Elliott to get forward with good running down the wing, on one such occasion Elliott struck a sweet long shot on goal which forced the goal keeper to make a save. David came on for Nathan in defence. With the lads working well in defence Woodley Hawks were restricted to a number of long shots keeping Josh on his toes having to make a number of saves. Woodley Hawks got their equaliser when they broke free from our defence but it wasn’t long before we regained the advantage when Archie had an excellent looping shot on goal, which went in over the goalkeeper. The play ebbed and flowed between the two sides with David making some good tackling and clearances whilst at the other end Louis and Elliott combining well for Elliott to have a good shot on goal.

The First half ended 1-2

The second half started the same as the first with good quick passing from the whole team which was great to see, but Woodley Hawks weren’t going to give in easily and forced Josh into making a number of good saves. Jack came on for Alex and slotted in well up front and working hard for the team tracking back and tackling. Louis made an excellent cross in for Elliott who nearly headed in a goal, they again combined well for Jack to nearly stab home a goal, but the keeper managed to save it. Nathan came on for Archie. Woodley Hawks kept pressing for the equaliser forcing us to play more defensive with both Callum and David working hard with great tackles and interceptions, as was the whole team and when they did manage to break free Josh was on top form with a sliding save. Just as we thought we weathered the storm and with only a couple of minutes to go a dubious penalty was awarded for hand ball which I think was harsh because the ball bounced up and struck the top of his arm and couldn’t have done anything about it. They scored from the spot to make it 2-2. The lads fought on to try and get the winner but the game ended honours even.

The Game ended 2-2

Well done lads another great all round team performance showing some great pass and movement with a good understanding of each other’s positions. I believe we deserved more from the game but football is a funny old game so keep working hard and the results will come.

This weeks Effort Award went to Josh.

Westwood Wonderers 0 v Dynamos JFC 1

Team:   Josh (goal keeper)

            Nathan (defender), Callum (defender

            Archie (midfield), Elliott (midfield)

            Louise (Striker), Alex (Striker)

Sub:      Jack, David, and George.

The lads started the first half well by making the most of Dynamos nervous start with good early pressure. It looked like it was only a matter of time before we was going to score with Archie having a long shot going wide, and then with a good cross from Archie to Louise who’s shot just went over the cross bar. Archie and Louise combined well again to feed Alex who shot but went wide of the mark. A shout of “HANDBALL” was heard as the ball was floated into the box, which was met by the out stretched arm of a Dynamos player a PENALTY was awarded. Nathan stepped up to take the penalty, the ball was struck sweetly only to come off the post for the goalkeeper to save. A good understanding can be seen between the midfield and front two players as another good passing move between them resulted in a shot from Alex going just wide. With the ball not going in the net the Dynamos players started to play with a bit more belief and had one or two attacks of their own which brought our defenders and goal keeper more into the game forcing Callum to make some well timed tackles and for Josh to make his first good save of the match. Elliott also worked hard tracking back and making timely tackles when needed. At this point David came on for Nathan. The game became more open and with Elliott adopting a more forward role had a shot go wide from a good cross from Archie. With Dynamos getting more confident they were seeing more of the ball, keeping Callum, David and Elliott on their toes with each of them making great tackles. At this point Jack came on for Alex. A free kick was awarded to Dynamos outside our box that forced Josh into another good save and for Elliott to clear the danger.

The First Half ended 0-0

The second half started with Dynamos seeing more of the ball with Callum and David working hard keeping them at bay. When we did attack we attacked with purpose with good combination play with Jack passing to Archie who the released the ball for Elliott to have his shot come off the cross bar and in my opinion went in but the ref didn’t see it that way. Soon after Louise had a shot on goal saved by their goalkeeper. Disaster struck when a looping cross came into the box to just fall under the cross bar and into the net, What a freak of a goal but it was the only way they were going to score. George came on for Jack and Nathan came on for Archie. The lads worked their socks off to get the goal back with George and David keeping them at bay, making good tackles and releasing the ball to the midfield to mount attack after attack. Elliott passed to Louise who’s shot just went pass the back post, Nathan worked hard firing the ball into the box but some how the ball never found the back of the net.

The Game ended 0-1

It was one of those games where the ball just wasn’t going to go in and a game we didn’t deserve to loose. On the plus side, We were pleased with some of the passing and movement between the lads which was first class and couldn’t fault the lads for their effort and work rate across the whole of the team, so chin up lads our time will come.

This weeks Effort Award went to Callum
